Tradition And Games / Breaking The Wishbone From The Thanksgiving Turkey Or Any Time
I came across this post on my facebook page from 2018.
WOW! We just broke the turkey wishbone and it broke into 2 even sections with the top flying across the living room into the kitchen. I wonder what that could mean. My Daddy always broke the wishbone from our Thanksgiving Turkey with someone at the dinner. Daddy loved having fun and carving the turkey.
I went on line and looked up the history of wishbones....
Breaking the turkey’s wishbone is a long‑standing holiday tradition that blends folklore, symbolism, and friendly competition.
Origins and Meaning
The practice dates back to around 800 BCE among the Etruscans of ancient Italy, who believed birds, especially chickens, were oracles. After a chicken’s death, they would lay the furcula (wishbone) in the sun to dry, then stroke it while making a wish Country Living+1. With chickens scarce, the Romans adapted by breaking the bone in half so more people could share in the luck Delish+1. The tradition moved to England, then to America, where it was applied to turkeys Country Living. The wishbone symbolizes hope, luck, and fortune, with its V‑shape representing connection and the bringing together of wishes Cookist.
How It Works
After carving the turkey, the wishbone is removed (often before cooking for easier carving) Delish. Two people grip opposite ends, usually the thicker side for better leverage, and pull while making a wish. The person who ends up with the larger piece is believed to have their wish granted Delish+1. A dry wishbone is easier to break, so it’s often left to air‑dry for a day or two Delish+1.
Tactics to “Win”
Research by University of Michigan biomedical engineers suggests:
Grab the thicker side for more strength.
Keep your side steady to avoid breaking it yourself.
Choke up (pull closer to the base) for better leverage Delish+1.
Variations
Some versions involve balancing the bone on the nose, shaking it, or using a “fist‑choice” method where the other person picks which piece to keep HowStuffWorks.
Symbolism and Legacy
The tradition is a lighthearted way to add a touch of magic to the holiday meal, blending ancient superstition with modern family fun. It’s also tied to the phrase “getting your lucky break,” showing how deeply wishbones have embedded themselves in cultural folklore HowStuffWorks.
In short, breaking the turkey wishbone is both a practical (carving aid) and symbolic (luck‑seeking) ritual, rooted in ancient belief systems and now a beloved Thanksgiving custom and party game.
